Some of Va.'s 'Brown v. Board' college grants go to whites

Half a century after many Virginia public schools shut their doors rather than accept black students, the state is offering college scholarships to compensate those whose education suffered in the era of "massive resistance" to desegregation. Among the recipients: white students.
Since 2004, about 70 people have won the scholarships, including a handful of white Virginians whose schooling was disrupted in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A precise count of white scholarship recipients was unavailable, but the total is believed to be fewer than 10. Officials who oversee the state program say they want to spread the word to more white students who might be eligible.
"Both black and white students lost an opportunity because of the state's decision, and both deserve this aid," said Brenda Edwards, who administers the Brown v. Board of Education Scholarships for the Virginia Division of Legislative Services. "White people hear Brown v. Board, and they think they're not eligible. We're trying to change that perception. . . . We want more people to get the education they missed out on years ago."Phyllis Archer, 57, a scholarship recipient who is black, said the push to include white students in the program is misguided. "This was the state's chance to apologize for wrongdoing, not to award people who have never known racism," Archer said.

On almost every major issue since he took office in January 2009, Obama has dumped responsibility on someone else, merely paid lip service, or let the issue quietly fade away. Just this year, the issues that have gotten the no-leadership treatment from Obama include: the deficit, the debt, Medicare, Social Security, Medi-caid, energy, corporate taxes, medical liability, immigration, and Libya.The president set his pattern of negligible leadership early on in his administration. Rather than draft his own proposals on economic stimulus, health care, cap and trade, and Wall Street reform—his top priorities—he delegated the job to Democrats in Congress.

Obamacare waivers get axe in last-minute Friday night news dump
In what's appearing to be a last-minute move to avoid scrutiny, President Barack Obama's administration announced late Friday that it is doing away with Obamacare waivers.
Obama administration official Steve Larsen said no new applications, or waiver renewal applications, will be accepted after Sept. 22 this year. Larsen said politics was "absolutely not" a part of the decision to do away with the controversial program, but it certainly looks that way with the decision to dump the news on Friday. It's a common public relations practice to roll news out late on Fridays when trying to shift attention away from controversial topics.
The administration defended the Obamacare waivers program until now, saying it was necessary to avoid disrupting negative economic effects on employers who couldn't afford certain provisions in the legislation. The waivers exempt recipients from having to annually increase the amount of coverage they provide their employees with, a major part of the Obama administration's healthcare overhaul.

Clinton voters still skeptical of Obama for 2012
Though many Hillary Clinton supporters clenched their teeth and supported Barack Obama in 2008, many remain frustrated with the president's failure to champion women's issues and believe he should expect a lower turnout among women for his 2012 reelection.
"After 2008 [Clinton voters] were basically told get over it, and they haven't gotten over it," Amy Siskind, president of the feminist advocacy group The New Agenda, told The Daily Caller.
Women, however, did vote for Obama in droves with the hope that he would tackle the issues important to them once in office. This has not been the case according to many Hillary Clinton supporters.

Russ Feingold: The Democratic Party Is In Danger of Losing Its Soul
Russ Feingold and some 2500 other progressives at Netroots Nation (Facebook) are expressing some well-deserved righteous anger with the very non progressive Democratic Party and its center-rightist leader Barack Obama:
"I fear that the Democratic Party is in danger of losing its identity," Feingold said in his keynote address to a crowd of around 2,400 progressive activists and bloggers here at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the most ever for the event. .
"I think it's a mistake for us to take the argument that they like to make that, 'Well, what we're going to do now is, we're going to take the corporate money like the Republicans do and then after we win, we'll change it.' When's the last time anyone did that? Most people don't change the rules after they win by them. It doesn't usually happen. It never happens," Feingold said. "You know what? I think we'll lose anyway if we do this. We'll lose our soul when it comes to the issue of corporate domination. People will see us as weak. People will see us as corporate-lite.”
